ICT Ireland, the IBEC group that represents the Irish high-tech sector, today welcomed the announcement that the Government will appoint a Chief Information Officer (CIO), reporting directly to the Taoiseach. Making the announcement, the Taoiseach Brian Cowen said the CIO will advise the Government on how to take a pro-active, leading role in championing ICT innovation and development, as part of building a Smart Economy.
ICT Ireland Director Paul Sweetman said: “The greater use of information and communications technology (ICT) will be key to boosting Ireland's competitiveness and generating employment. The announcement of the new role is a welcome recognition of the critical role that ICT will play in enhancing innovation, productivity and efficiencies in our economy.
