A new deal for Ireland
Following last years rejection of the Lisbon Treaty, the Irish Government conducted extensive research to establish what concerns people had.
The other members of the EU listened to these concerns and agreed to a "New Deal" for Ireland.
At a meeting of the European Council in Brussels on 18-19 June, Ireland secured agreement on a series of legal guarantees:
(i) the right to life, education and the family
(ii) taxation
(iii) defence and neutrality
The guarantee on taxation means that Ireland will retain control of our Corporation Tax rate.
The legal guarantee on taxation says
"Nothing in the Treaty of Lisbon makes any change of any kind, for any Member State, to the extent or operation of the competence of the European Union in relation to taxation. "
Also guaranteed is a Solemn Declaration of the 27 Member States confirming the high importance attaching to workers’ rights and social policy.
It was also confirmed that if and only if the Lisbon Treaty is ratified Ireland along with the other member States would retain a commissioner.
On the basis of these new measures, designed to deal comprehensively and definitively with Irish concerns, the government is putting the question before the people again.
Voters can vote yes with the confidence that their concerns have been addressed and that the Lisbon Treaty is a positive step forward for Ireland.
