Lisbon Treaty

A step on the road to recovery
In the last year Irish fortunes have severely declined. A year ago we were losing 100 jobs a day. Today the figures are closer to 600 jobs. While other countries share many of the problems we now face, Ireland's international reputation has taken a blow.
The Irish economy is viewed as particularly exposed, with our EU membership remaining a defining strength. Now is the time to focus on protecting the jobs we have and taking steps to put Ireland onto a firm path to recovery.
While the scale of both the global and domestic economic crisis has highlighted our vulnerability it has also highlighted the importance of our relationship with Europe.
Ireland is a small fish in a very big pond. Our interests, our businesses and our jobs, are best served by a large and powerful block such as the EU acting on our behalf on the global stage.
The Lisbon Treaty was, in many ways, designed to ensure that the EU is better equipped to deal with the sort of major challenges that have arisen in recent times on the global stage.
On Friday 2 October we have the chance to send a clear message to our European and international partners that we are open for business and are keen to play a full and active part in a reformed Europe. That is where our interests lie, that is where our future rests.
